Counting practice
supplies: any type of small container, at least 55 small items, small tongs.
Label each container 1-10, place the small items in a bowl and hand your child the small tongs. The small tongs will help your child's motor skills while they grip and release the items. Instruct your child to read the number on the first container and have them place that many items in the container as they count each item they put in the container.
container #3...child will pick up 3 items one at a time and place in the container.
Introducing the alphabet
Supplies: large paper, 2 colored markers
With your child watching, write the uppercase letters on the paper with one colored marker. Say each letter as you write it and have your child repeat. Then write the lowercase letters beside their uppercase letter using the other colored marker. Say each letter as you write it having your child repeat.
Extra practice: Have your child choose a third colored marker and trace the letters.
Paper cutting station
Supplies: paper strips, pen, child scissors
Draw lines on each strip (straight across, straight down, wavy, pointed). Hand your child the scissors and check for correct finger placement. Direct your child to follow each line on the strip to practice cutting control and motor skills.
